The Berenstain Bears: Bless Our Pets is another title in the Living Lights series. This time the Bear family take their pets to a Blessing of the Animals service at their church, the Chapel in the Woods. Many bears show up with their pets so that Preacher Brown can say a blessing over them, but things get a little wild when a dog decides to chase a cat. Things are brought back under control when it seems that God sends a special heavenly shaft of light to shine on Preacher Brown and refocus everybody’s attention.
Personally, I wasn’t overly impressed with this book. It’s neat to see all of the different animals and learn about how our pets are a blessing to us, but I’m not into the whole blessing pets thing. If you think a story like this would be beneficial in your church (because there are some churches who hold this kind of ceremony), it might be a fun way to introduce the topic to younger kids. With that being said, though, I thought the part about the heavenly shaft of light was a bit hokey.
